HOMOLOGATION OF EXHAUSTS AND SILENCERS |
The vehicle reform manual, in point 2.6, for vehicles of category L, reads:
"ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This reform affects the layout, total volume, silencers, catalyst, exit section.
For the replacement of exhaust silencers, vehicles approved for the refurbished vehicle are allowed in accordance with Directive 97/94/EC Chapter 9, in vehicles registered before 01/01/2009 or approved with Directive 2005/30/EC or later for all other vehicles without testing.
In vehicles approved by 92/61/EEC or 2000/24/EC, the incorporation of a silencer approved by 2005/30/EC or 97/24/EC Chapter 9 shall be mandatory.
The replacement of silencers with others complying with Directive 97/24/EC Chapter 9 or replacing catalysts with others complying with Directive 2005/30/EC shall not be considered reform.
It is understood by exit section, the stretch between the last silent and the exit."
Today the change of the exhaust silencer is not considered reform provided that one approved on the basis of Directive 97/24CE is installed, and the number of exhaust outlets is maintained. If the silencer complies with this, it is not necessary to include it in a data sheet by type-approval.
In many ITVs, the engraving of the exhaust type-approval mark is only checked, however, if they deem it appropriate they can request an escape certificate proving that this directive is complied with.

Whenever an exhaust silencer is purchased, the manufacturer/seller must be asked for a certificate indicating compliance with the corresponding directive, and in addition, that the model of your bike appear.
With this certificate and the corresponding engraving, if the exhaust maintains the original number of outputs it will no longer be necessary to do anything else, and if you were changing the number of escape exits a compliance report may be issued for the legalization of the same in ITV.
To dim the sound, many times, along with the muffler a sound attenuator device, commonly called dB-Killer, is installed. This device, by breaking the sound flow, lowers the exhaust decibels needed to adapt to the levels authorized by manufacturers and administration.
Remember, the deletion of this device can result in a penalty.
The installation of an exhaust is very simple, in most cases the joints between the different elements, are made by flexible joints, whether by springs, springs or clamps. This is done because the exhaust is an element subjected to constant vibration and movement.
For installation or replacement, simply release the springs and proceed to the exhaust tail change, re-ensuring the installation with the original elements.
